Sự tích Bánh chưng Bánh giầy | The Legend of Banh chung Banh giay

Throughout history, ‘bánh chưng‘ and ‘bánh giầy’ have held a unique significance in the hearts of the Vietnamese community. These two symbolic cakes represent the harmonious relationship between the ’round sky’ and the ‘square earth,’ intricately tied to ancestral worship traditions and the reverence for the Hùng Kings in Vietnamese culture. Ngày xửa ngày xưa, vào đời vua Hùng Vương thứ sáu, sau khi đánh thắng giặc Ân, nhà vua muốn truyền ngôi lại cho người con nào vừa có đức vừa có tài. Vua có hai mươi người con trai, ai ai cũng đều giỏi giang nên vua không biết nên lựa chọn ai để nối nghiệp mình. 

Once upon a time, in the era of the sixth Hùng King, a triumphant victory over the Ân invaders set the stage for a royal decision. The King pondered the pivotal question of passing the throne to a worthy heir—one blessed with both virtue and talent. Among his twenty sons, all distinguished in their own right, the king found himself in a quandary, unsure of which son to choose to carry on his legacy.

Một ngày xuân nọ, nhà vua họp các hoàng tử lại và bảo: “Con nào tìm được thức ăn ngon lành, để bày cỗ cho có ý nghĩa nhất, thì ta sẽ truyền ngôi vua cho.” 

One spring day, the king gathered his princes and declared, “Whoever of you can find the most delicious food to grace the table with the most meaningful feast shall be the one to inherit the throne.”

Các chàng hoàng tử đều đua nhau tìm kiếm những của ngon, vật lạ ở khắp nơi, với hy vọng lấy lòng được vua cha và được truyền lại ngôi vị. 

All the princes eagerly raced to seek out delectable treasures and exotic items from far and wide, hoping to win the favor of their royal father and inherit the throne.

Trong 20 người con trai, người con trai thứ 18 của Hùng Vương tên là Lang Liêu, tính tình hiền hậu, sống đạo đức, hiếu thảo với cha mẹ. Phần vì mẹ mất mất sớm, thiếu người khuyên bảo, phần vì không nhiều vàng bạc của cải để tìm kiếm những sản vật quý hiếm giống các anh nên chàng trăn trở không biết dâng món vật gì lên vua cha. 

Among the twenty sons, the eighteenth, named Lang Liêu, stood out in the crowd. He was known for his gentle nature, moral character, and deep filial piety towards his parents. Since he lost his mother at an early age and was not as wealthy as his older brothers, Lang Liêu faced the challenge of finding a rare and precious offering for his father, the Hùng King.

Một hôm, Lang Liêu nằm mộng thấy có một vị thần hiện lên và mách bảo: “Này con, vật trong Trời Đất không có gì quý bằng gạo vì gạo là thức ăn nuôi sống con người. Con hãy nên lấy gạo nếp làm bánh hình tròn và hình vuông để tượng trưng cho Trời và Đất. Bánh sẽ có nhân đậu xanh và thịt lợn, tượng trưng cho muôn loài đang hiện hữu trên hành tình nay. Hãy lấy lá bọc ngoài, đặt nhân trong ruột bánh, để tượng hình cha mẹ sinh thành.”

One night, he dreamt of a deity who told him: “There is nothing bigger than the sky or the earth, and the rice is the most precious of all. Now, take glutinous rice to craft two cakes—one square and the other round—symbolizing the earth (as people once believed it to be square) and the sky. It will have a filling made of mung beans and meat symbolizing plants and animals living on earth. You will use green leaves to cover it, representing parents’ care for their children.”

Lang Liêu tỉnh dậy, vô cùng mừng rỡ. Chàng làm theo lời Thần dặn, chọn gạo nếp thật tốt làm bánh vuông tượng trưng cho Đất, bỏ vào chõ chưng chín gọi là Bánh Chưng. Và chàng giã xôi làm bánh tròn, tượng trưng cho Trời, gọi là Bánh Giầy. 

When he awoke, Lang Lieu was very happy and started preparing the two things described by the deity. He named the square-shaped sticky rice cake “Bánh Chưng” and the round-shaped one “Bánh Giầy”. 

Đến ngày hẹn, các hoàng tử đều đem thức ăn đến bày trên mâm cỗ. Ôi thôi, đủ cả sơn hào hải vị, nhiều món ngon lành. Hoàng tử Lang Liêu thì chỉ có Bánh Chưng và Bánh Giầy. Vua Hùng Vương lấy làm lạ hỏi, Lang Liêu đem chuyện Thần báo mộng kể cho cha nghe, giải thích ý nghĩa của Bánh Chưng Bánh Giầy. Vua cha nếm thử, thấy bánh ngon, hài lòng với ý nghĩa làm ra hai loại bánh, bèn truyền ngôi vua lại cho Lang Liêu con trai thứ 18.

When the day came, as the princes gathered to present their offerings on the grand banquet table, laden with a delightful variety of delicious dishes from near and far, Lang Liêu stood out by presenting the humble Bánh Chưng and Bánh Giầy. When Lang Lieu presented his father with them, the King was very impressed by the taste and the meaning that Bánh Chưng and Bánh Giầy represented. He then declared that Lang Lieu would be the new King. 

Kể từ đó, mỗi khi đến Tết Nguyên Đán, người dân Việt Nam thường làm Bánh Chưng và Bánh Giầy để dâng cúng Tổ Tiên và Trời Đất.

Since then, every Lunar New Year, the Vietnamese people often make Bánh Chưng and Bánh Giầy to offer to their ancestors and the Gods of Heaven and Earth.
