The Inspiring History and Significance of Vietnamese Women’s Day

Vietnamese Women’s Day, celebrated on October 20th, is a special occasion honoring the contributions and achievements of Vietnamese women. This day is a time to reflect on the progress made in women’s rights and empowerment, as well as to acknowledge the challenges that women continue to face.

Historical Background

The origins of Vietnamese Women’s Day can be traced back to the early 20th century. Since 1927, numerous women’s mass organizations began to form, attracting a significant number of participants. These women gradually affirmed their roles and positions in society through various activities, including propaganda groups, vocational training, and large-scale struggles involving thousands of women.

The important role of women was officially recognized in the first Platform of the Party, “Men and Women for Equal Rights,” on February 3, 1930. At this time, the Party acknowledged that women were a crucial force in the revolution and set forth the task of liberating women, which was closely linked to national and class liberation.

The Party proposed that women should join revolutionary organizations such as trade unions and peasant associations, and also establish separate organizations for women to attract participants from all walks of life to the revolutionary cause.

On October 20, 1930, the Vietnam Women’s Anti-Imperialist League (Hội Phụ nữ phản đế Việt Nam), now known as the Vietnam Women’s Union (Hội Liên Hiệp Phụ nữ Việt Nam), was established. To mark this event, the Communist Party of Vietnam has decided to choose October 20 every year as the traditional day for Vietnamese women. It is also a day to celebrate and honor Vietnamese women, taking the name “Ngày Phụ nữ Việt Nam” (Vietnam Women’s Day).

The Significance of October 20th

October 20, 2024, marks the 94th anniversary of Vietnamese Women’s Day. This date is a significant historical milestone, commemorating the establishment of a mass organization for women that operates legally and openly, aiming to unite and encourage women to actively contribute to the country’s revolutionary cause.

This day also serves to affirm the equal rights of women to vote and participate in political and social activities. It highlights the role, position, and importance of Vietnamese women, who, whether in wartime or peacetime, have consistently demonstrated patriotism, wisdom, health, dynamism, creativity, cultural values, kindness, and a concern for societal and community interests.

October 20 is an occasion for ceremonies and gatherings to honor women across all fields. It is also an opportunity for men to show affection, express love, and give meaningful gifts to the women in their lives, whether they are mothers, wives, or daughters. This day serves as a reminder to cherish the women around us, as they represent “half the world.”

Challenges and Progress

Despite significant progress in women’s rights and empowerment, Vietnamese women continue to face numerous challenges. Issues such as gender-based violence and discrimination remain prevalent.

However, there have been notable advancements in recent years. Women have made significant strides in education and the workforce, and they are increasingly represented in leadership positions. For instance, Nguyễn Thị Kim Ngân was elected as Chairwoman of the National Assembly in 2016, and Trương Thị Mai became the first female Executive Secretary of the Communist Party in 2023. Additionally, Võ Thị Ánh Xuân and Đặng Thị Ngọc Thịnh have both served as interim Presidents of Vietnam.

The Vietnamese government has also implemented policies to promote gender equality and empower women. These policies aim to increase women’s participation in political and social activities, ensuring that women have equal opportunities to contribute to the country’s development. The percentage of women in the 15th National Assembly Plenum is now at 30.26%, higher than in previous terms. Despite these advancements, women are still underrepresented in executive offices and higher echelons of power.

Efforts continue to address these challenges and further promote gender equality, with a focus on tackling deeply rooted social norms and beliefs against women leaders and strengthening leadership capacities to support future female leadership.
