Về nghĩa đen, câu tục ngữ này có nghĩa là khi tiếp xúc, sử dụng mực mà không khéo, ta có thể bị vấy bẩn lên người, sách vở, quần áo; ngược lại, khi ta ở gần nơi có ánh sáng thì ta sẽ được soi sáng, dễ dàng nhìn thấy mọi thứ hơn.

Người Việt thường dùng câu tục ngữ này với nghĩa bóng như sau: nếu ở trong môi trường không tốt và tiếp xúc với những người có lối sống không lành mạnh thì con người sẽ dễ bị tác động theo chiều hướng tiêu cực.

Ngược lại, khi ở trong môi trường tốt đẹp, tiếp xúc với những người có lối sống đẹp và hành vi đúng đắn thì con người cũng sẽ dễ dàng học hỏi được những điều tốt đẹp ấy và trở nên ngày càng hoàn thiện hơn.
