Tết Nguyên Đán (Vietnamese Lunar New Year), also known as the Tết Âm lịch, Tết ta, Tết Cổ truyền or simply Tết, is the most important holiday in Vietnamese culture. It is a time for family reunions, honoring ancestors, welcoming the new year, and wishing each other peace, health, and prosperity. Vietnamese call all this “ăn Tết.”

Tết typically falls in late January or early February, marking the beginning of spring in the Gregorian calendar. Preparations for the holiday begin as early as December 23rd, or the Kitchen Gods’ Day, when people begin shopping for new clothes and household products, cleaning and decorating homes, making a variety of traditional dishes, giving new year presents, buying flowers and ornamental plants, etc.
Among these traditions, the preparation of bánh chưng and bánh tét holds great significance for
many families and communities. In the North, families make bánh chưng, while in the Central and
Southern regions of Vietnam, bánh tét is more common. Both types of cakes are made from sticky
rice, mung beans, and pork, wrapped in either dong or banana leaves. Bánh chưng is square-shaped, while bánh tét is cylindrical. For the Vietnamese people, these cakes are not just delicious holiday foods; they also symbolize the rich cultural heritage of wet rice agriculture, respect for ancestors, and gratitude for a bountiful year.
