Chợ nổi là nét đặc trưng của miền Tây Nam Bộ, khu vực Đồng Bằng Sông Cửu Long.
Sở dĩ có tên gọi chợ nổi là vì chợ được họp ở trên sông, người dân dùng thuyền, ghe chất hàng hóa lên và thực hiện việc mua bán ngay trên ghe, thuyền.
Một nét đặc biệt khác là những ghe hàng thường không treo biển hiệu mà chủ ghe thường lấy chính loại hàng hóa mình bán treo lên một cây sào cao ở đầu ghe gọi là “cây bẹo”, khách mua hàng sẽ nhìn vào món hàng được treo ở đầu ghe để biết ghe bán hàng gì.
Hàng hóa phổ biến nhất của chợ nổi là nông sản: rau, trái cây, gạo và thường họp chợ sôi nổi nhất vào buổi sáng.
Ngày nay chợ nổi đã trở thành điểm đặc biệt thu hút khách du lịch khi đến tham quan miền Tây.
Một số chợ nổi nổi tiếng ở Việt Nam có thể kể đến là: chợ nổi Cái Răng – Cần Thơ, Chợ nổi Cái Bè – Tiền Giang, Chợ nổi Ngã Năm – Sóc Trăng.
