“Lạt” is bamboo string
“Mềm” means “soft”
“Buộc” means to tight
“Chặt” means tightly
“Lạt” thường được người Việt dùng để buộc các loại bánh gói trong lá chuối/lá dong (ví dụ: bánh chưng, bánh tét, …)
Dây lạt nhìn rất mỏng manh nhưng lại có thể buộc chặt các loại bánh này và góp phần tạo nên vẻ đẹp bên ngoài cũng như hương vị hoàn hảo cho chiếc bánh.
Người Việt thường dùng câu thành ngữ này để ví von rằng trong cuộc sống, để hoàn thành mọi việc một cách tốt nhất thì dù các quy tắc và nguyên tắc vẫn được áp dụng nhưng thái độ cần mềm mỏng và khéo léo thay vì sự cứng nhắc và khó khăn.
Trước kia, câu thành ngữ này được người Việt dùng để nói về mối quan hệ giữa vợ chồng. Tuy nhiên, ngày nay, nó còn được áp dụng một cách rộng rãi trong mối quan hệ người yêu, cha mẹ-con cái, sếp-nhân viên,…

At the last bánh chưng bánh tét workshops, our participants had the chance to get to know the idiom/proverb: Lạt mềm buộc chặt.
So, let’s study with us to know more about the meaning of this interesting idiom.
“Lạt” is usually used to tie many kinds of “bánh” wrapped in banana leaves/”dong” leaves.
“Dây lạt” is very thin and soft but they can tie these “bánh” very tightly and somehow support to bring them the perfect appearance and texture.
Vietnamese people usually use the idiom “lạt mềm buộc chặt” as a metaphor that means if you want to accomplish something with a perfect result/outcome, the soft attitude/practice should be applied instead of the stiff or bold one. Of course, the rules and regulations are still applied at the same time.
In the past, this idiom was used to talk about the relationship and behavior between husband and wife.
Nowadays, it is widely applied to lover, parent and children, employer and employee, etc.
