I highly recommend VLS for all your Vietnamese language learning needs! However, I want to talk specifically about the new weekly topic/question-based lessons that VLS just started offering. I think VLS calls them “Content-based Lessons”. Every month there is a new set of topics (four in total), which for the most part so far have been guiding questions about different issues like whether or not age is a major factor in relationships or people’s varying definitions of success. You can sign up for all of the lessons for a given month or just the ones that pique your interest. Each lesson is scheduled for two hours, which is time well spent in my opinion, especially because the class sizes are small (typically 2-4 students). This means that each student has ample time to practice sharing their thoughts on the given topic in Vietnamese and to ask plenty of questions. Normally I’m not a big fan of group classes when I’m trying to study a language, but these lessons have been enjoyable so far. It’s really nice to have the opportunity to hone in on a specific topic or set of questions and to hear other folks’ opinions in real time. These lessons are great if you want more practice discussing specific issues in Vietnamese and/or if you want to learn sets of vocabulary or structures that are commonly used to talk about a certain topic. That being said, since these lessons often require students to talk at length, these lessons are more suited for intermediate or advanced level learners. If this sounds like something you might be interested in, you should sign up for a lesson!
