December is a very "special" month for VLS and especially for any of our students who have a passion for music because friend of the VLS, Lee Kirby, will be performing a show titled "Lee Kirby - Vietnam ơi!" which will take place on 28th December, 2013 at the Conservatory of Ho Chi Minh City. This performance is the culmination of over three years of Vietnamese language and music study for Lee. He is the first British person to have released an album of Vietnamese songs and these are available on iTunes now. He loves the word “ơi” in Vietnamese, as he senses it is uniquely sweet, unlike its use in English. Naming the album and the show “Việt Nam ơi!” he wanted to express his gratitude to Vietnam and the Vietnamese people for their endless inspiration and support in nurturing him to become a great participator to Vietnamese music and culture.
Lee Kirby lives and works in the UK. But whenever he has a chance to go to Vietnam, he usually takes time to practice his Vietnamese at VLS even though he is very busy with his music project "Trà đá với Lee – Iced tea with Lee". His love of Vietnamese music came first and he learned to sing Vietnamese songs before he could speak the Vietnamese language. His Vietnamese classes with the teachers at VLS have helped Lee understand the depth and emotion behind each lyric in the Vietnamese songs he sings, in addition to helping him communicate and express himself Vietnamese outside of music.
Lee Kirby is well-known and admired all over Vietnam for his heartfelt voice in Vietnamese songs. The Vietnamese classes at VLS have shown another side of Lee at: a polite, humble, and slightly naughty student in T-shirt, shorts and no shoes. Holding a guitar and singing next to the parking lot after finishing class.
VLS is inspired to accompany him on the journey to share the Vietnamese soul through Vietnamese language and Vietnamese music.
