What’s coming up?
VLS proudly presents the music show named “VIỆT NAM ƠI, TUY XA MÀ GẦN/ FAR AWAY BUT NEVER APART!” by Lee Kirby, who is one of our beloved and talented students, and a famous singer for singing Vietnamese songs.
With eternal love for Vietnam, Lee Kirby is coming back to Vietnam to do the show at the end of this October, 27/10.
Who is Lee Kirby?
Lee Kirby, born and raised in England, has learned Vietnamese at VLS since 2008, and is passionate to Vietnamese music. He ishas become well-known for his genuinely soulful performance of Vietnamese songs, especially the classics of Trịnh Công Sơn and Trần Tiến.
"We are young, so don’t hesitate to try what you love. Do not be too concerned about the thoughts of others, do what you really like before it's too late." – Lee Kirby.
Why does Lee Kirby want to do the show again?
In 2013, he published his album “Việt Nam ơi!” and completed 2 successful tours around Vietnam.
“Despite not being in Vietnam, so much of my life has changed because of my experiences in Vietnam, which means that reminiscing about the past is always apart of my present. As a result, I decided to come back and do a show named “VIETNAM ƠI, TUY XA MÀ GẦN!”(Vietnam ơi, though being far away but I’m never apart from you) - Lee said.
The name of the show literally means, calling to Vietnam and saying although far away, I am still close. My thoughts behind this phraseology are that Vietnam has never left me, so in a certain way, although I have been away from Vietnam, my life is constantly reminded of the amazing memories that you, Vietnam and the Vietnamese people, have given to me. Through this concept, I have three aims for the show:
- Reflect upon my past experiences and help remind the Vietnamese people of the love and affection that I have for Vietnam. I hope to do this through my interpretation of some wonderful songs as well as sharing my thoughts about my experiences.
- To inspire others to attain their own goals in life and overcome the fear that somehow paralyzes our thoughts and subsequently diminishes our chances of a more rewarding life full of exciting experiences.
- To encourage non-Vietnamese to learn more about Vietnamese culture and language, leading to them to feel that they too can feel confident to learn this very interesting language.”
