The original name of some provinces and towns in southern Vietnam (Part 6)
1. Bến (pier)
At first, this word indicated those places where boats would stop to transport and or trade.
Then, “Bến” is used as “coach station”. Like market, pier is distinguished and named by the good which sold most.
Some names of pier has become the ones of some places, for example: “Bến Cỏ”, “Bến Súc”, “Bến Củi” (Binh Duong Province), “Bến Đá” (Thu Duc District), “Bến Gỗ” (Bien Hoa).
Besides, a pier can be named by some special features, for example, a kind of plant which is popular there: “Bến Tranh” in My Tho, “Bến Lức” in Long An (in fact, it should have been “lứt”, a kind of plant which has small leaves and trunk, its root is used to be an apothecary)
