Learn Vietnamese in Ho Chi Minh City - Live in Vietnamese

Vietnam is a country of water rice agriculture, which has 2 rice crops per year: Winter - Spring and Summer - Autumn, 4 months each. The Summer - Autumn crop is from 5th month (May) to 10th month (October) of the lunar calendar. In traditional water rice agricultural life, mid-autumn is the time when the hard work of starting the crop, planting and taking care of the young rice is over. This is also the time when the weather cools down and becomes even nicer at night. The whole family can relax to enjoy the nice weather, the ease and the season’s beautiful moon. Parents and adults can step away from their field work to spend time treating their children with sweets, seasonal fruits, and helping them make star lanterns.

This special annual celebration allows the kids enjoy moonlit nights for a week with the family and the community, starting from 8th – 15th of lunar August. The main festival nights are 14th and 15th when the moon is really big and bright. Children are treated with a nicely decorated tray of fruits and sweets and given lanterns. Carrying lanterns, they parade around the village,  play games. Then they return to the moonlit yard in front of their house. And in the cool of the night, they gather around their grandmother and look up at the moon, while she tells them the legend of a man sitting under a banyan tree on the moon which is named Chú Cuội and Cây Đa in Vietnamese. Every child tries to see these 2 characters on the moon. All believe they can see such this man and this tree on the moon when it is brightest and clearest.
